Fuel pc loads but won't start11/12/2022 At this point, the electricity for the fuel pump is supplied by the oil pressure sending unit. Once the engine is running, the fuel pump relay shuts off. The key here is to produce a small amount of voltage but consistently to the fuel pump. The fuel pump relay is activated long enough to supply the current required to turn on the fuel pump. When you turn the key in the ignition to start your car, the “start cycle” of the combustion engine begins. The fuel pump relay can be located in different places on different cars: under the hood, on the firewall, or near the steering column, to name a few locations. If you cannot find it, check your owner’s manual. The fuel pump relay can be found in most engine bays. In most vehicles, the fuel pump relay can often be found in the fuse box in the engine bay, which is usually a long black box which contains fuel pump relay along with various other fuses and relays. When you shut off the ignition, it powers down the fuel pump. When you turn on the ignition, the fuel pump relay is activated and will supply electricity to turn on the fuel pump. It is usually controlled by the ignition or the power control module. The combustion engine needs fuel to run, and the fuel pump relay ensures that that engine gets what it needs. The fuel pump relay is a necessary component for the combustion engine model to function. (Photo Source: arrow) What is a Fuel Pump Relay? The relay is vital for the function of combustion engines. Learn how the fuel pump relay works, the telltale signs of a failing fuel pump relay and how to diagnose, replacement costs plus regular maintenance tips. Therefore, problems with the fuel pump relay will result in the fuel pump malfunction, which in turn will cause start up issues.Ī bad or failing fuel pump relay will often show symptoms to tell the driver something is wrong. Whenever the ignition is turned on, the fuel pump relay will supply or “pass on” a consistent voltage to the fuel pump. To “relay” means “to receive and pass on”. The fuel pump relay is the electronic component found on all vehicles with an internal combustion engine. The fuel pump can malfunction due to several reasons, one of which is the lesser known issues with the fuel pump relay. Is the theft or security light on? If so then that is where your problem is.You might be familiar with the fuel pump, the component inside the fuel tank that creates pressure in the fuel lines to push gasoline to the combustion engine for it to run. If no fuel injector signal, this could be a bad PCM. If no fuel pressure, there could be a bad fuel pump. If you have spark, then you need to find out if you have fuel pressure and fuel injector pulse signal. Just changing all these parts does not help since we don't what the engine is missing. In general, you need to know if you are getting spark and fuel. This could be many different things wrong with your vehicle, and some are make and model specific. Changed sparks plugs, coils ,crankshaft position sensor, camshaft senor.Īnswer: You need to tell us what make and model vehicle you are asking about. Question: Car cranks but wont start or stay running. There are also many tools to do these tests. Check for compression, see if the internal parts such as the Camshaft are turning, etc. Is the engine mechanically capable of starting.Ĭhecking the internal components of the engine is required. There are several special tool / tests to check the injector system.Ĥ. If not, then a plugged or failed injector is the cause. If the test light blinks, then the injector should fire. Pulse can be tested with a special test light. No "Fuel Injector Pulse" can be caused by a faulty computer, wiring, or a computer. Do the injectors fire and spray fuel into the engine. Spark on some spark plugs can be caused by faulty ignition coil, spark plug wires or the plugs themselves.ģ. A faulty sensor, computer, ignition module, etc. Is there sufficient spark at all the spark plugs. Refer to a manual for the proper pressure for your application.Ģ. Different makes and models require different fuel pressures to start. Some cause of low or no fuel pressure are a plugged fuel filter, faulty pump relay, blown fuse, bad fuel pump. Some basic checks will need to be done to diagnose this problem. If when you turn the key the engine turns over normally but will not start, there can be any number of reasons for this problem.
